The U.S. military is rapidly expanding its anti-drone capabilities as modern warfare becomes increasingly dominated by unmanned systems.
According to Militarnyi, the Pentagon has signed a $500 million contract with Perennial Autonomy to develop and supply new counter-drone technologies for the U.S. Armed Forces.
New drone systems
The agreement was signed through Joint Interagency Task Force 401, the Pentagon group responsible for coordinating anti-drone programs.
Under the deal, the U.S. military plans to acquire several AI-powered interceptor systems, including Merops interceptor drones, Bumblebee quadcopters, and Hornet attack drones.
Some of the systems are already being used by forces operating under United States Central Command.
Perennial Autonomy specializes in autonomous systems and artificial intelligence designed to detect, track, and destroy hostile drones.
Lessons from Ukraine
Pentagon officials say the war in Ukraine has dramatically changed how the U.S. military approaches drone warfare.
The widespread use of FPV drones, kamikaze UAVs, and coordinated swarm attacks has pushed the Pentagon to speed up the development of counter-drone technology.
Artificial intelligence will play a major role in the new systems, helping automatically classify threats and coordinate drone interceptions in real time.
The project will also focus on protecting military bases, infrastructure, and frontline units from aerial attacks.
Combat testing
Some of the technology has already been tested using lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.
According to Twentyfour Industries, one of Perennial Autonomy’s systems, the Merops AS-3 Surveyor, has reportedly helped destroy more than 4,000 Russian drones.
Production of the Merops interceptor systems is also expected to begin in Germany through a partnership between Perennial Autonomy and Munich-based drone manufacturer Twentyfour Industries.
The Pentagon’s investment highlights how quickly drone warfare is reshaping military strategy around the world.
